Excellent advice that is easy to read and assimilate.

I have been self employed since 1984, with the past twenty years spent helping self employed folk and small business owners. This advice is pure gold. The many stories offer deeper guidance than any lecture can. And I saw myself and many of my clients in many of these same dark holes.

If you are already in business for yourself, read this book. And if you are planning to start out, read this book. It will be the best advice you can possibly get, from an impartial source that has no agenda to steer you into their way of thinking. (Maybe therein lies the true value?)

The Knack

It is an easy read, plain and simple he wrote it in layman's terms so you don't need a college degree to understand the book. Bo is very insightful and lays a lot of the groundwork for the average Joe who wants to become their own boss. One is example he used was how he started a bike messenger company in the late 1980s, sounds like a simple concept right. Wrong he said the cost of acquire customers was much higher than he expected because the services he provided were new to the market. Bo said up until that point the firms would just send a secretary out in a cab for a few hours to make any crosstown deliveries. The secretaries liked this they got to leave the office and get a change of scenery. The other thing was the firms were set in their ways. Eventually Bo prevailed and had a large cap company with 9 figure working capital. Ironic to is the title of the book because he has a knack for breaking down complex problems to their simplest form then he works from the ground up. Bo also takes on about ten new people each year to mentor. The man should be a professor, lastly the man also has a column in INC magazine that has been published for the last 20 years. This is a quintessential book for anybody thinking about becoming their own boss.

Read this, and then re-read it

This book is an invaluable resource for start-ups and small businesses who want to get wise on how to avoid pitfalls and common mistakes in running/growing a business. I've been an avid reader of Inc. Magazine, where I've followed Norm's Street Smarts column for years. It's great to have all of that wisdom distilled into a book.

The book is also an enjoyable read, with small anecdotes sprinkled throughout the already prose-like format. The book is filled with Norm's no-nonsense, down-to-earth style. This is the next-best thing to having your own personal business mentor guiding you for less than 20 bucks.

Norm is a numbers sort of guy (which he is fond of pointing out), and that is what many small business owners are most inexperience with. Plenty of his solid and practical numbers-oriented advice grounds this book. The only thing I'd love more of (or maybe this would be more appropriate in a follow-up book) are more details on business formulas and accompanying examples to help figure out your own numbers (like COGS, gross margins, etc.)

All in all, this book is an engaging read and gives you a steady stream of good tips you can actually apply to your business today.

The best version of an old classic tale

What a treasure: the illustrations and the story go hand in hand so wonderfully, quiet and witty and authentic. If you have Slavic roots, the Ukrainian illustrator's work may have extra resonance for you. Yaroslava drew the animals wearing Ukrainian costume, but with subtle touches of real life; this one's boots have creases, see the wrinkles in that one's heavy coat. I always wondered if there was an anti-Soviet subtext to the characters all insisting on sharing one living-space until it bursts at the seams (literally)...

I am a children's librarian and I like Alvin Tresselt's version of this classic story better than Jan Brett's version, especially for sharing with a group. The story makes a wonderful impromptu play to do with a group of children, some stuffed animals and a big sheet or blanket. I always share this story with children at Christmas time.

In the second volume to date of the popular Penguin Lives series to be devoted to a woman (remarkably, only four of the projected 26 subjects will be female), historian Brinkley shreds several key myths surrounding Rosa Parks, the African-American woman who became "the Mother of the Civil Rights Movement" at the age of 42, when she boldly defied Jim Crow laws by refusing to give up her seat to a white rider on a segregated bus in 1955. The act catalyzed the historic 381-day Montgomery bus boycott and stirred the nation's conscience. Yet Parks has a more complex personality than is suggested by her shy, soft-spoken public persona, Brinkley reveals. Despite a humble, fatherless childhood in rural Alabama, she quickly distinguished herself as a tireless worker with the local NAACP, devoting her energies to area youth groups, recording the problems of victims of hate crimes and participating in the organization's major state conferences. Brinkley (The Unfinished Presidency, etc.) pinpoints the origins of Parks's strength and strong social commitment as he details the legalized segregation that tainted every aspect of Southern life. His short, compelling scenes rivet the reader, although some merely expand on previously disclosed events, such as the wave of jealousy and backbiting among Parks's peers, her resurgence in Detroit politics as an aide to Representative John Conyers and the savage beating and robbery that almost took her life in 1994. On December 1, 1955, the seamstress, who married Raymond Parks and served as secretary to the NAACP chapter in Alabama's capital, refused to give up her city bus seat to a white man and was arrested for violating racial segregation laws. Brinkley's contribution to the "Penguins Lives" series captures the resolve that helped launch and guide the Montgomery Bus Boycott of 1995-56 and the crusading protest that followed. An easy-to-read synthesis, this book offers general readers an accessible profile of both Parks and black protest against white supremacy for most of the 20th century. An Essential American Biography

Brinkley's breathtaking research and literary skill are combined in this book to produce a narrative that not only vividly paints the story of Rosa Parks' life, but that also illuminates the complexities of the Civil Rights Movement of which she was an important part. Beginning with her youth in Tuskegee, Alabama, Brinkley adroitly weaves together the details from Rosa Parks' life which shaped her character and her values. In elegant prose, he depicts the path that led to the legendary day in 1955 when Rosa Parks refused to move from her seat on a segregated bus; he then leads the reader through the journey of the Montgomery bus boycott and the half century Ms. Parks has lived since. This slim biography manages to trace the significance of figures from Booker T. For those of us who have not experienced the segregated South of the early 50's, this slim volume paints a vivid picture of what life was like for Rosa Parks. Thorough research gives us a rich picture of the influences of the people and forces in her life. Far from being a tired seamstress, it portrays Mrs. Parks as a bright and inquisitive woman, willing to risk everything for what she believed. Disappointments and disillusionment are also chronicled, but we never lose sight of her essential strength.

An interesting review of David Livingstone's life but I felt it got bogged down in analysis of his motives and reasons for his explorations so lost track a bit of the accomplishments. I felt the final chapter redeemed the book by giving an amazing overview of the longterm outcomes of his life's work.
