About the Author

About the Author

John Pile, Jr. is an assistant professor of game programming at Champlain College, where he teaches courses in graphics programming, game physics, game networking, and iPhone game development. He has a decade of experience as a game programmer and indie game developer. He was a multiplatform engineer on the team that developed the 2009 BAFTA Scotland Game of the Year, Flock!, and the acclaimed repackaging of CAPCOM’s Final Flight: Double Impact. He earned an MS in computer games technology from the University of Abertay.

Excellent

This book does a great job of starting with easy and fun concepts, then ramping up the difficulty gradually throughout the book. It covers lots of cool techniques that industry professionals use in AAA games such as shaders, splines, and particle systems. The code samples are especially helpful in mastering the tools of the trade. The author doesn't just teach techniques specific to video games, but also shows how to replicate techniques that the film industry has been using for decades such as parallax. If you are just starting to code video games, or want a well rounded lesson in a variety of important techniques, then I would definitely recommend this book for you!

This book presents a overview of the use of 2D graphics in XNA (C#) game programming. It begins with some basics on computer graphics, then covers sprites, animation, tile mapping, and 2D cameras. Then it goes on to a nice explanation of the various ways to simulate perspective with 2D graphics ("the 2.5D effect").
Next it covers fonts and menus, particles and special effects, and concludes with a chapter on the use of shaders (GPU programs) in 2D games and finally a chapter on achieving a polished look for your game.
It also contains the standard appendices on math that no one reads.

Great Text Book

I was excited when Professor Pile announced his book publication. After meeting him in person I see that his book is a reflection of his strong commitment to teaching newcomers and converts the craft of game programming and design. You will definitely find this text book useful both in your personal library and in a classroom. He touches on advanced topics in computing right from the start, something sorely lacking in many game programming books today. The book is well designed and uses examples that are relevant to today's 2D game development marketplace. You will definitely learn something from this book.

Many rural communities in South Carolina share a place in World War II history that has largely been forgotten. From 1943 to 1946, towns such as Aiken, Florence, Camden, Spartanburg, and York were enthusiastic hosts for a special group of laborers: German prisoners of war. These prisoners from the North African, Sicilian, and European campaigns filled needed jobs, mostly in agriculture, all across the nation. In South Carolina, prison camps were established in rural areas where labor was needed in agriculture, the lumber industry, and a few manufacturing jobs. Prisoner labor was also used on military bases to free civilian and army personnel for front-line duty. By the end of W.W.II, over 425,000 German, Italian, and Japanese prisoners were interned in prisoner of war camps in the United States. In South Carolina, the War Department established more than twenty camps in seventeen counties housing 8,000 to 11,000 German prisoners. These prisoners provided much needed labor in agricultural communities and were often the only direct connection with the "enemy" experienced on the home front. This book explores the general policies of the United States toward captured prisoners of war and to analyze their implementation in South Carolina from the perspectives of the American officials, the German prisoners, and the communities that housed the camps. This book examines the history of prisoners of war in South Carolina, focusing on life behind the wire, the labor performed by POWs, and the impact of this labor in South Carolina, the adherence to the Geneva Convention, attitudes that influenced policies for the treatment of prisoners, local reaction to the POWs and their labor, as well as the prisoners' impressions of the conditions in which they were held.

"In her thoroughly researched and timely book, Ms. Deann Bice Segal gives us a glimpse of the 8,000 to 11,000 German Prisoners of war who found themselves incarcerated in South Carolina during the Second World War. These POWs, "the enemy among us" or the so-called "Supermen" of the 1940's were mysterious to the people of rural South Carolina who, as the war continued, needed laborers to assist in agriculture, the lumber industry and manufacturing. Ms. Segal tells us about the complex relationships that arose in southern communities and among American government agencies that, in wartime, developed policies for accommodating the prisoners who lived in the camps. The author goes further, however, than official documents and strengthens her analysis by including details from interviews with former POWs (such as German sailor Albert Brathe) and the residents of the Carolina towns which hosted the Germans. As Ms. Segal writes, her book examines "life behind the wire" (e.g., food and health care), the benefits to the state's economy, local adjustments to the foreigners, and the prisoners' impressions of the conditions in which they were held. All of this occurred, as the author stresses, in an era in which the Geneva Convention guidelines for POWs were relatively untested... This study is thoughtfully prepared and sharply presented. Wonderful Book!!!!!!

I for one am greatly disturbed that this book is no longer being printed!!!!

I used this book for my students in their Happiness Class here in Brooklyn College.

The book was simply fantastic as a text book for enabling students to think outside the box and to challenge underlying assumptions about their personal matrix and the world at large.

Above all else the book was easy to read, readily accessible to my students and most important of all, the included material worked in that it dramatically changed and altered student's lives!

I strongly urge the publishers of this book to reprint it; the book is simply that invaluable of a resource.

Underwhelming

This title left me underwhelmed.

I was looking for an introduction to NLP. This did not give me the introduction I sought.

My gripes:

1) It is not clear who the audience is. At some points the authors are writing for new practioners and at other points for NLP trainers.

2) The text is not well edited. It gave the feeling of having been spell checked but not proof read. There were too many times I had to re-read a sentence which read, for example, "on" instead of "in."

3) The book boasted of many case studies which suggests third person and clinical examples. The cases studies were from the authors' personal experiences and too often were weak or did not support the points being made.

4) Almost finally, I hated the incessant lists. Since this was my first NLP book, I don't know if list making is inherent in NLP, but there was a list for everything. The exercises also seemed painfully naive to me, but I did not try them because I was not convinced by the authors that they were anything more than ... hate to say it...but trite.

5) The book's references had a psuedo academic feel to it, no doubt to enhance its own legitamacy, but in fact it seemed a little ridiculous. This was an introductory book.

I will keep looking for a better NLP introductory book.

Great INTRO to NLP

This book is a great introduction to NLP, however some other NLP books i have read, have taken NLP further than this book. I would highly recommend this to people new to NLP, however all people can get a lot out of this book.

Perfect for fans of the Magic Ex Libris series!

I love Hines's Magic Ex Libris series, and getting to look back and see Nicola's introduction into the world of magic was inspiring. It certainly explained her love of chupacabras, and her unique relationship with music. I was brought to tears a couple of times toward the end and absolutely adored Nicola's tale. I almost never get around to picking up the little ebook additions to authors' series; I'm very glad I made time for this one!

A Short Story Starring an Autistic Young Teen Heroine

As an autistic woman the character Nicola Pallas means the world to me. While the word autism is never mentioned the clues are clear and we are given a positive representation where her magical skill builds off one of her autistic traits.

Coming from the Magic Ex Libris series I knew this brief story about Nicola would be appealing to get more about a character I already loved. If you are a Libriomancer fan don't expect to come out of the story with a new list of books to seek out or for more of Smudge though, that is not what this story is for. It is a young Nicola Pallas short story set in the same world with the same magic framework but works as a standalone story than can lead you on to the full series but does not have to.

As an educator I think many middle schoolers and up, adults included, who are into fantasy would be interested in this quick read unless they are uncomfortable with matter of fact mentions of body fluids. They are not in the story to be gross and they are not sexual but you might want to preview this before handing it to a kid if you think it may be an issue for them.

Thanks for the Nicola Pallas backstory!

I really enjoyed the chance to read Nicola Pallas' backstory. This tale is set twenty years prior to Libriomancer, book one in the Magic Ex Libris series. It deals with Nicola's introduction to libriomancy/magic. I hope to read more stories about some of the other characters' origin stories in the future. Author Jim C. Hines has said that the series ends with the fourth book Revisionary (2016). But I think he has not ruled out doing some more short pieces in this world. According to his blog, he is currently [2016] writing an sf trilogy. That's fine. A number of my favorite authors switch back and forth from sf to fantasy. At least he is still writing!
