Even if one uses the definition in The New Hackers Dictionary of 'a collection of arcane, unpublished, and (by implication) mostly ad-hoc techniques developed for a particular application or systems area', that really does not describe this book. The truth is that hacking is none of the above. If anything, it is a process that is far from mysterious, but rather aether to describe. About the Author

Jesse Varsalone has been teaching for 18 years. He taught high school for eight years, five in the Baltimore City Public Schools. After teaching high school, Jesse started teaching computer classes at the Computer Career Institutes at Johns Hopkins University and Stevenson University. He currently teaches online as an adjunct professor at Champlain College in Burlington, Vermont. Jesse holds a number of certifications in the IT field.

Matthew McFadden researches, develops, and instructs network intrusion investigations. Matthew has spent several years in the field of information technology specializing in information assurance and security, network intrusion, malware analysis, and forensics. Matthew has performed research projects, consulted, and presented, and has worked in network administration. He also holds industry IT certifications.

Computer Anti-Forensics and Forensics 101

Jesse Varsalone hits this one out of the park. Jesse leverages his depth of knowledge and experience with his years of teaching experience to get right down to business.
He leads the computer forensics/hacker n00b through the nuts and bolts of vulnerabilities. He jumps right in and demonstrates in the first 3 pages what a hacker can do using descrete vulnerabilities and keeps up the pace throughout the rest of the book. He always demonstrates how vulnerabilities are exploited and what to do to stop them or discover them.
Jesse is a seasoned CF professional and instructor and this is obvious in the logical step by step manner the book is written. I found the explanations of the "how and why" of safely and legally testing the techniques he covers quite relevant and important to newcomers. These also serve as good reminders for those who may dabble in hacking and penetration testing.

The Table of Contents reads like a syllabus for a anti-forensics and computer security college class. It starts with the basics of Windows exploits and how to defend against them and steps the reader through each attack like a lab exercise, and then steps the reader though the defensive tools. This cookbook, lab-type presentation enables the reader to see and do the attack and understand the defense. The reader can literally follow the steps on their own test setup.
At just shy of 400 pages it isn't a enormous 10 pound tomb of knowledge, but a readable, doable guide of the Black Arts of computer hacking and anti-forensics.

This book would serve well as a college text for a Basic Anti-Forensics or Intro to Computer Security courses. It provided up-to-date, relevant CF concepts and exercises that are the foundation for a computer security or Computer Forensic tech. This is also a handy reference of the more common exploits, how they are utilized, detected and thwarted.

I found the contents to be current and timely, combining discussions of the newest techniques with old school hacks that are still relevant today. The content is tight and without extra fluff and easy to either browse through or to follow page by page, front to back.

Pulls you far enough to get into it, then moves on.

I had mixed feelings when I began to digest the content of this book. Some parts of it are great, step-by-step tutorials on how to do various tasks, such as installing kon-boot. Other aspects made this a sign to point you in the direction, like the SQL section, is very vague. Overall, this is mainly a tour guide, he won't tell you all you might want to know, but it goes into enough depth is several different topics that you should have some understanding, and also know where to go from this book, to more specific ones. I did learn a lot, really I did. But it was so spread out over a varity of topics, each topic I didn't learn to much about. So this is good for broad understanding of various concepts, which I belive was the goal of the book, now I know for example, that now I am more prepared for other more specific books.

Really good reference for someone experienced in the topic who wants to improve their skills

If there ever was a book that should not be judged by its title, Defense against the Black Arts: How Hackers Do What They Do and How to Protect against It, is that book.

According to Wikipedia, black art can refer to:
* art forms by persons of African descent
* black magic
* optical effect in stage magic
* typesetting
* process that is mysterious or difficult to master or describe

Even if one uses the definition in The New Hacker's Dictionary of "a collection of arcane, unpublished, and (by implication) mostly ad-hoc techniques developed for a particular application or systems area", that really does not describe this book.

The truth is that hacking is none of the above. If anything, it is a process that is far from mysterious, and rather either to describe. With that, the book does a good job of providing the reader with the information needed to run a large set of hacking tools.

Defense against the Black Arts is another in the line of hacking overview books that started with the first edition of Hacking Exposed. Like Hacking Exposed, the book walks the reader through the process of how to use hacking tools and how to make sense of their output.

Defense against the Black Arts is written for the reader with a good technical background who is looking for a nuts and bolts approach to ethical hacking. Its 14 chapters provide a comprehensive overview of the topic, with an emphasis on Windows.

But for those looking for an introductory text, this is not the best choice out there. The book is written for the reader that needs little hand-holding. This is in part due to its somewhat rough around the edges text and the use of more advanced hacking tools and techniques.

By page 4, the author has the reading downloading BackTrack Linux. BackTrack is a Ubuntu distro which has a focus on digital forensics and penetration testing. BackTrack is currently in a 5 R1 release, based on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and Linux kernel 2.6.39.4. BackTrack comes with a significant amount of security and hacking tools preloaded, which the authors reference throughout the book.

After showing how to install BackTrack, chapter 1 shows how to log into Windows without knowing the password. Much of that is around the Kon-Boot tool, which allows you to change the contents of the Windows kernel in order to bypass the administrator password. Tools like Kon-Boot though will only work when you have physical access to the machine.

Chapter 3 gets into the details of digital forensics and highlights a number of popular tools for forensic imaging. While the book provides a good overview of the topic, those looking for the definitive text on the topic should read Digital Evidence and Computer Crime: Forensic Science, Computers and the Internet.

Chapter 5 deals with web application penetration testing. The authors describe a number of tools that can be used to assess the security of web sites, and offer ways to attempts to manipulate data from a web page or web application.

One is likely hard pressed to find a large web site that will be vulnerable to such web attacks, given that most of them have already checked for those errors via validation control testing. Smaller vendors may not be so proactive, and find out that those $99- items are being sold for .99 cents. With that, the chapter details a number of tools developers can use to test for SQL injection, XSS and other types of web vulnerabilities.

Chapter 8 is about capturing network traffic. There are two perspective to collecting traffic. For the attacker, it is about identifying holes and avenues for attack. For those trying to secure a network, collecting network traffic is an exercise in identifying, thwarting and defending the network against attacks.

Chapter 10 provides a brief overview of Metasploit. For those looking for a comprehensive overview of Metasploit, Metasploit: The Penetration Tester's Guide is an excellent resource. This chapter like many of the others provides the reader with detailed step-by-step instructions, including screen prints, on how to use the specific tool at hand.
Chapter 11 provides a long list of attack and defense tools that can be used as a larger part of a penetration tester's toolkit.

Chapter 12 is interesting is that it details how social engineering can be used. The authors show how public domain tools like Google Maps can be used in to mount an attack.

Chapter 13 - Hack the Macs - is one of the shorter chapters in the book and should really be longer. One of the reasons pen testers are increasingly using Macs is that the newer Macs run on the Intel platform, and can run and emulate Windows and Linux. The increasing number of tools for the Mac, and significant Mac vulnerabilities, mean that the Mac will increasingly be used and abused in the future.

Just last week, Dr. Mich Kabay wrote in Macintosh Malware Erupts that malware specifically designed for Mac is on the rise. This is based on progressively more and more serious malware for the Mac since 2009 where given that Apple products have been increasing their market share for laptops and workstations but especially for tablets and phones.

The article notes that one of the reasons Mac OS X is perceived as superior to Windows is because of its appearance of having integrated security. But although the design may be sound, the operating system does not prevent people from being swayed into thinking that the malicious software they are downloading is safe. With that, Apple will have to concentrate more on security and vulnerability within their operating system.

The book ends with about 30 pages on wireless hacking. The chapter provides an overview of some of the weaknesses in Wi-Fi technology and how they can be exploited. The chapter focuses on the airmon tool, part of BackTrack that you can use to set your wireless adapter into monitor mode, to see all of the traffic traversing the wireless network.

Overall, Defense against the Black Arts: How Hackers Do What They Do and How to Protect against It is a really good reference for someone experienced in the topic who wants to improve their expertise.

Nice little book

The book covers practically all the interview questions you might get in US job market. For each and every question you might find easily 5-10 different opinions by browsing the web. But if you need just one, which is good enough to help you look good at the time of an interview - that is a quality book!!! Mine already has about 100 yellow highlights I made for the future use.

My personal suggestion - if you are thinking of a specific question answered - start with the Index at the end of the book. It is very nice and helpful. I would rather place it at the book's beginning.

About the Author

Daniel Markovitz is president of TimeBack Management (www.timebackmanagement.com), a consulting firm that radically improves individual and team performance by identifying and eliminating root cause impediments to productivity. He is a faculty member at the Lean Enterprise Institute and teaches at the Stanford University Continuing Studies Program. He also leads a problem solving workshop at the Ohio State University’s Fisher School of Business.

Dan lived in Japan for four years and is fluent in Japanese. He’s also an avid distance runner, an enthusiastic (but somewhat tentative) cyclist, and a determined (if slow) swimmer. How to focus on "HOW" I work.

Traditional Work: How you work is probably how you worked.

When I looked at that line in my notebook (after reading Daniel Markowitz's book, A Factory of One) I thought about the busy-ness that many people talk about as they relate to their workday. As you consider what you get done in a typical 8 or 10 or 15-hour shift, do you stop to consider HOW you get that work done?

Over the 145 pages of this well-written - and well-documented - book Dan shows very specific methods you can use to apply "Lean Principles" (traditionally reserved for manufacturing and production lines to remove wasted movements thereby increasing overall productivity) to the "Knowledge Work" that keeps so many of us busy and focused on working overtime.

I was pleased to see Dan write about Parkinson's Law of work: Namely, that the work you have will generally fill the time you have available to do that work. If something is due in a week, it'll take about a week. If it's due later today, well you get the point.

The point of applying Lean Principles to improve personal performance is two-fold:

1. Create a flow of working: so that once you get there, you stay there and produce something (a thought, a product, etc) of value
2. Reduce the stress of wasted movements to focus on more meaningful activity

If you're thinking of getting this book, here's just one of the themes you can expect to explore while you're reading:

Dan asks you to define your "value;" the value of your service or product to the market. Once you've identified that value, then you can work on making things as efficient as possible in order to make that value available to those that matter: clients, community, organization, family, friends, etc. Oh, it might be helpful to know how Dan defines value. I'm walking away with three indicators:

What does the customer pay for?
What are you doing to transform the product or the service?
What activity seems to be done "correctly?"

Of course, you'll walk away from reading this with your own ideas of what "value" means to you, your business, your work. I loved this prompt, though, as it made me think a bit longer about all those "extra to-dos" that have piled up around my own work station lately:

"Should you do better what doesn't deserve doing in the first place?"

Consider what you do, as an entrepreneur, manager, associate of the business you're in. What are the specific activities that you "do" that provide value? The ideas that Dan gives you on (a) how to think about those activities and (b) what to do to make those activities as efficient as possible may be exactly what you need to take not just what you do but HOW you do it to the next level. Imagine being MORE productive without having to buy new technology, hire more staff or change (radically) your business or product.

What WILL you have to change? Your approach to work. To get you think about what that might look, sound and feel like, identify very specifically WHERE your time goes:

fixing
delegating
waiting
over-doing
reviewing
re-doing
explaining
etc

Once you identify WHERE your time, energy and focus is "spent" during the day, then it's time to apply Lean Principles to YOUR work. I hope you enjoy reading (and thinking about) this book as much as I did!

How do you handle inputs into your life? Do you process them effectively and efficiently?

These concepts will be very familiar to people familiar with continuous improvement and more specifically Lean and Six Sigma. However, you do not have to be a practitioner to understand or read the book. When trade terms are used they are explained in simple everyday language without losing a beat. The author demonstrates an in depth knowledge of the Lean Principles. There may be others with his depth of knowledge but I have seen few transfer it into such simple, practical and useable terms. I found myself reading a "how to" book like a novel, reminding myself more than once to bend a corner or mark a page for future reference.

My favorite part of the book was the part on living in your calendar versus your inbox. Quick look at your screen and see what is open! That comment in itself added more than a few minutes to my day of productivity. Another example is his description of a personal A3 for problem solving was absolutely flawless in its description and the use of it.

Are you going to get 2 hours a day of time saving tips from the book? I doubt it. What you will get is more productivity and feeling better about what and how you accomplished it. It was my New Year's Day read and I have picked it up every day since then. Not saying you won't be able to put it down but at this point it looks that way for me.

Conceptually, the basic premise is interesting and makes sense. Below are some pro/con thoughts to consider.

Pro:
+ Like I say above, the basic premise you're a mini factory is a good one... what value add do you produce?
+ Good "lean" points e.g., "What separates the lean approach to work is the notion that improvement is part of the daily work..."
+ The example of the artist using Standardized Work is (now) a favorite and I'll use that going forward
+ Good observation that (Western) society rewards rapid answers, not well-thought out ones (not a new concept, but it was a welcomed addition nonetheless)

Con:
- I was surprised to see 5S presented ahead of both Visual Management and Standardized Work
- Generally, concepts lead with the tools first, which I think defeats lean as a system that cultivates good thinking
- The A3 thinking method should contain one countermeasure (addressing one problem) only
- In PDCA, it is important to stress that Plan is both noun and verb (and so I'm not fond of the Standardized Work "wedge" and PDCA ball graphic borrowed by the author to show how SW prevents backslide).
- I prefer the term "Standardized Work" over "Standard Work." The "ized" is the active/continuous conversion of customer standards into a routine. The customer sets the standards and these need to be converted into steps. Plus, this looks a lot like "Word Standards" which are devised for accountants.

Bottom line: Good, but note possible cons.

PreSchool-Grade 1-Bertie just loves everything that adults consider dirty. He picks up candy from the street and boogers from his nose. He hunts for slugs and worms and pees on the flowers along with his cat. All this is performed to constant admonishments from those around him, "No, Bertie! That's dirty, Bertie!" He learns the hard way to stop most of his bad habits with one exception, picking his nose. The text is uninspired and the illustrations too broadly cartoonish and unattractive. Those looking for a good read about bad behavior would be better served by David Shannon's eponymous tales (Scholastic).

Fantastic Illustrations!

I spotted this book on the shelf of a bookstore in Greenwich, England largely due to the illustrations rather than just the content. I bought it for my then two-year-old son while we were living in London. Of course I suspected what others have confirmed in their reviews, namely that it initially taught him about some dirty habits rather than moving him away from them. But that was short-term and with repeated reading he soon learned not to______, or ______, or eat _____ and ______.

Still, we both did find it hilarious and over a year later, he's still enjoying this one. And in the long run he doesn't "wee in the flower bed", or "pick boogies from his nose", and he never eats them, so I think one can still argue that the book works. As others have written, he does love repeating "No, Bertie that's dirty Bertie!".

This year on a return trip, I managed to find another book illustrated by David Roberts at the Tate Modern Museum Shop - Cinderella (an Art Deco rendition) and it's also a great story with a modern twist.

I hope more of his books will be sold here in the US.

tickles the funny bone in kids

My 6,4 and 2 year old all love this book. They think it is hilarious. They love to shout out "No Bertie, that's dirty Bertie" . I thought it may have been a little young for my 6 year old but I think the "oooh yuck factor" won him over. He liked it so much he couldn't wait to take it to school so his teacher could read it to the class. It makes everyone giggle and I recommend it highly , so do my kids!

Not my cup of tea

I purchased this book because it was a bargain book (only $5.99) and I thought it might have a lesson for my daughter about not eating or touching yucky things. For me, I think some of the references (picking "boogers" and "eating boogers") and illustrations (Bertie and the cat "peeing" in the flower bed) are inappropriate. The book basically gives kids new ideas. When I was finished reading the book to my daughter, she proceeded to stick her finger in her nose and say "Look mom!" I would have returned the book but my daughter ripped one of the pages shortly after we read it. I also thought about donating it to the library but would have to do so anonymously because I wouldn't want my name associated with it.
