limited details, very basic info you could find on the web

I guess I should've known better to look at the author's credentials before I purchased the book. Steven D. Fisher is an independent writer, illustrator, and instructional designer. (exerpt taken from the book bio at the back) Not necessarily the best person to learn the complexities of commercial real estate from. The book had some useful business and very basic real estate refresher type material but lacked the details I was expecting to find for a book entitled 'The Commercial Real Estate Investors Handbook'. I have a background in commercial real estate finance and found the lack of detail in the 'commercial loan documents' section neglecting critical details about how loan documents can make or break a deal and you as the investor. If you know absolutely nothing about commercial real estate, this book would be helpful as a simple introduction but nothing more.

The worst real estate book I have ever read.

This book is for kindergarten level investor. Book is easy to read and the author lays out concepts that is common sense but lacks any benefits for its reader. If you are a novice, this book is for you. I stopped reading after page 16, then skim through the rest of the book in less than 10 minutes. Some parts are clearly erroneous. Here is a sample excerpt from the book. Please tell me if this is logical: "An apartment building appreciates faster than single-family homes because it costs more in the first place. A single-family home worth $300,000 appreciating at 10 percent generates $30,000 worh of appreciation. An apartment building worth $1,000,000 will generate $100,000 worth of appreciation at 10 percent, meaning more cash in your pocket" Now, people who gives 5 stars, ARE YOU SERIOUS???

This book covers the risks and rewards of real estate investing, along with types of investments, the basics of getting started, factors affecting commercial real estate values, understanding real estate market psychology, sources of financing, finding profitable deals, and financing. In short, it covers everything a beginner would need or want to know before embarking on this type of investment.

That's not all it covers. There's also information about commercial real estate loan documents, an explanation of leases, negotiating purchase agreements, managing tenants, insurance, sale of commercial real estate properties, marketing real estate properties, and taxes. Two appendices include sample lease forms. A glossary is beneficial to beginners who haven't yet mastered real estate and investment terminology.

The Commercial Real Estate Investor's Handbook: A Step by Step Road Map to Financial Wealth is definitely not boring or dry. It's an interesting, practical and informative book that anyone considering real estate investing should invest in (no pun intended).

Ken Adam is the most distinguished living production designer in the world. His work spans seven decades and more than seventy-five movies, from his revolutionary designs for the first seven James Bond movies to work on Stanley Kubrick's Barry Lyndon and Alan Bennett's The Madness of King George, for both of which he won an Oscar.

Born in Germany, Adam trained in London as an architect, and his first Art Director credit was on Around the World in Eighty Days in 1956. He has subsequently worked in Hollywood, Italy, and Germany as well as Britain.

Ken Adam's extensive personal archive of concept sketches, drawings, set stills, and photographs from every stage of his career forms the basis of this book. Using case studies from the 1950s to the present day, it shows the whole cycle of his production designs, from initial concept to what appears on the screen itself. The result encapsulates the evolving role of the Art Director and Production Designer from the golden age of the big studios to the digital fantasies of the early twenty-first century.

The commentary is by Christopher Frayling, Rector of the Royal College of Art, London, Chairman of the Arts Council, England, Chairman of the UK's Design Council, and a Trustee of the Victoria & Albert Museum. 250 illustrations, 180 in color.

A MUST HAVE if you love movies and art

This is an amazing volume of Ken Adam's sketches,paintings, and drawings done all for various motion pictures-both made and unmade over his career. Included are some previously unseen concept sketches for all seven of his James Bond outings and some really rarely seen sketches for the first pass at the first STAR TREK movie in 1977. He's got a free-flowing, angular style of working and the energy is all there and you see how this is translated into the film. Especially rare to see are his sketches for DR STRANGELOVE(A gatefold of "The Big Board!") and BARRY LYNDON, both Kubrick films, because Kubrick was notorious for often burning every prop,blueprint and such, or hiding them well, so no one could use them to copy from them. Lots of other good stuff too, like his early work on CURSE OF THE DEMON(1957).

A good book that's not only informative but its a slice of cinema history.

"I never joke about my work 007"

I just finished this great book by Ken Adam while watching "Goldfinger" on Encore. After Q showed Sean Connery's James Bond all of the amazing gadgets in the Aston Martin, Bond said: "You're joking"! It was great to read that Ken Adam created all of those gadgets and many more along with the amazing sets in all of those movies and in many other movies. The book is full of his sketches and you get to see how his ideas progressed or changed. I liked the story about the War Room in Dr. Strangelove. When Stanley Kubrick wanted everything changed at the last minute, Ken went for a walk, took a valium and sketched the now famous design!! He is a truly talented person and it's nice to know more about the production of movies that goes well beyond the actors, directors, writers and camera crew. Ken Adam has led an amazing and talented life! This is a great book!

Where are all of the photos?

I am enjoying the book up to a point. I am a huge fan of his and of James Bond. It is interesting to see the drawings but I was also expecting to see the fantastic photos of the end results. They are few. The volcano set for "You Only Live Twice" deserves a fold out full color photo for example. It is the biggest set ever created in movie history!! I find the end result dull for a man who was never that because most of the drawings are B&W. Observe the sale price now being offered. Maybe including photos created legal problems?

Brown; his top political aides; former policeman and blueblood Andrew Thornton, the leader of an organization known as the "Company"; and other bluebloods, rich from money originally earned in horse-breeding and racing. Ralph Ross, a Kentucky state policeman who began a crusade to catch Thornton and his associates, was eventually forced out by being framed in an illegal wiretapping charge. Yet ultimately press coverage exposed the conspiracy. A labyrinthian tale, made complex by its mix of "good guys" and "bad guys," this will be of interest to libraries with large true crime sections. About the Author
Sally Denton is an investigative reporter, author, and historian who writes about the subjects others ignore--from a drug conspiracy in Kentucky to organized crime in Las Vegas; from corruption within the Mormon Church to the hidden history of Manifest Destiny; from one of America's bitterest political campaigns to the powerful forces arrayed against Franklin D. Roosevelt. She has an extensive background in print and broadcast journalism, including newspapers, magazines, and television, and is the author of eight books of narrative history and investigative nonfiction. While the subjects of her books at first glance seem disparate, they are actually unified by a central theme of the exploration of subjects in American history--and especially in the American West--that have been neglected or marginalized. What she has done in her 30-year career is to explore the unmentioned truths about America--what the eminent scholar Daniel Boorstin called "Hidden History." She is a Guggenheim fellow, a Woodrow Wilson public scholar, a Hoover Institute Media Fellow, a Black Mountain/Kluge fellow, the recipient of two Western Heritage Awards, and has been inducted into the Nevada Writers Hall of Fame. She is a fourth generation Nevadan, where she began her journalism career in 1976, and is a longtime resident of Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Intrigue and Deception

Sally Denton has written a book that this Kentuckian would have never thought possible! By examining what starts out as a simple rogue Lexington cop, she (through the work of a Kentucky State Trooper) follows a trail that leads to an exposure of absolute corruption. What one would think is a simple drug peddling ring turns out to have significant connections with South American governments, Quadaffi, major players in the Kentucky government, and a potential presidential candidate. This book in intriguing from the first sentence to the final page. I highly recommend it to anyone.

A must read for mafia buffs and native Kentuckians.

This book tells the detailed story of how a handful of Lexington socialites organized a crime ring that became a (maybe *the*) major smuggler of cocaine and other drugs into the Eastern United States. Complete with cover-up and contract murders, the author pieces together an intricate story that, before it's over, includes state and federal government officials as well as organized-crime syndicates from all over the country. Also recounted in the book is the life of Ralph Ross, the Kentucky State Policeman and electronic-surveillance expert, whose single-minded perseverance finally brought about the end of the smuggling ring.
It's informative as well as it is entertaining, and I recommend it to all true-crime fans, mafia buffs, conspiracy theorists, and Kentuckians.

An addendum to my review -- Ralph Ross dies

FYI -- Ralph Ross, the tenacious KSP officer who is a central figure in this book, died of cancer on August 24th, 2002. He was 70. The _Lexington Herald-Leader_ ran a story about his death that, some 12 years after "The Bluegrass Conspiracy" was published, is less than objective about Ross. Incidentally, this title was so controversial following its initial publication in 1990 that it was pulled from publication and has only recently been given a new printing. Ross was pardoned by then-Governor Wallace Wilkinson in 1991.
I'm sorry I won't get to meet him after all -- at least not on this side.

DELICIOUSLY CUTE, SERIOUSLY SWEET, DELIGHTFULLY ROMANTIC AND DEFINITELY ENTERTAINING !!!

Wow! I absolutely love it! Craving Her Curves 4 is the fourth book in Nora Stone's Craving Her Curves Series and it is a thoroughly delightful continuation of one of the sweetest love stories I've ever read. And yes, I said series as in multiple parts. Each book is by no means a short story and long enough to be considered a novel but each of the first three books do have a cliffhanger and the books need to be read in the order in which they're published. So readers please be forewarned, if you are looking for a happily ever after in this first, second or third book, you won't find it but you will be happy by the end of the fourth. What you will find is a wonderfully written contemporary romance between a handsome, kind-hearted, down to earth football player and a beautiful, curvaceous, very savvy magazine journalist who are desperately trying to navigate the obstacles of fame and fortune in order to find true happiness with each other and their families and friends. To simply say this series is only about Charlotte and Joey's romance, their friends and family is quite an understatement because it also has a large side order of heartbreak, drama, danger, betrayal, suspense, kidnapping and murder thrown in for good measure. The story is upbeat, well developed, fast-paced, enjoyable, satisfying, sweet, heartwarming, romantic and sensual. It is a delicious slice of contemporary romance with a side order of humor and just a smidge of angst and suspense which I found to be delightfully entertaining. This is not erotica but it does include a very loving relationship and some mild but very tasteful love scenes throughout the series. The dialogue is intelligent, well written and flows well. The characters are the main components of this story and I found them to be smart, funny, captivating, engaging, endearing, well rounded and sexy. Stone skillfully crafts these elements into a wonderfully entertaining and pleasantly satisfying story. Charlotte Rivera is a writer for Pinks, a well known women's magazine based in Dallas. She loves her job and her articles have helped more than a few struggling new businesses and their owners. Her latest assignment has her more than a little perplexed. She is scheduled to interview Joey Parker, a very eligible bachelor and star football player with the Bullets, for the magazine's upcoming Sexiest Guy In Football Feature and she knows absolutely nothing about football. What the heck was her editor thinking? But after meeting Joey, she quickly realizes that there is a lot more to this football player than his good looks and sexy persona. Charlotte is quite taken with the man himself and it seems that Joey is quite enamored with the beautiful, curvy Charlotte. Sparks fly and passions ignite but as in life, there are always challenges waiting to make their presence known and douse the flames of love. In Book One, Charlotte was physically assaulted and kidnapped by a psychotic football fan/stalker who was convinced that Charlotte was evil and did not deserve Joey. After her rescue Charlotte begins to question her decision to date Joey and breaks off their relationship while still in the hospital recovering from her injuries. To help her recover from the residual emotional injuries from her abduction, Charlotte agrees to see a therapist who helps her heal and regain her courage and independence. In Book Two, Charlotte slowly realizes that she is truly unhappy without Joey and apparently, he's just as miserable without Charlotte. He aches for the curvy vivacious journalist and desperately wants her back in his life. Oh my! They find their way back to each other, fall deeply in love and begin a wonderful relationship and it appears, against all odds, they will survive the media frenzy surrounding them. In Book Three, Charlotte discovers she's pregnant and she and Joey finally make it to the altar for their long awaited nuptials. While on their honeymoon, Isobel's new boyfriend, Ryan Haught, writes and releases an exposé on the happy newlyweds and now.....all hell has broken loose! Oh my! He has revealed very private, detailed information that he learned through his "pillow talk" with Isobel. As it turns out, Ryan was only using Isobel to get his story and as soon as it was published, he dropped her like a hot potato. What a creep! Charlotte, Joey, Jacinta, Patrick, Nick, Coach and the entire team are furious. Charlotte, Jacinta and Isobel accompanied by Joey and Patrick finally decide to go to Ryan's apartment to confront him and they find him.....dead.....murdered! Yikes! Was someone furious enough to murder him because of the article? Who would do such a thing! No spoilers from me but I will say this..... Beautiful, talented and very savvy magazine writer-check! Handsome, charismatic football player-check! Large wonderfully written cast of family, friends, teammates and other characters-check! Romance, a forever kind of love, family drama, wonderful friends, lots of humor, an engagement, a wedding, an unexpected betrayal, suspense, murder and a baby on the way-you bet! Whew! That and a whole lot more! If you're looking for a thrill ride, this isn't your book, but if you're looking for a sweet contemporary romance filled to the brim with fun and three close friends who are the modern day reverse gender equivalent of the three musketeers - all for one and one for all - then this is your book! Deliciously cute, completely captivating, seriously sweet, delightfully romantic and definitely entertaining! Fabulous entertainment and an awesome read!

Nora Stone at her best!

I received an ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review and may I say that this one was VERY hard to put down. From the beginning of the story, which picks up from part 3, it was a page turner. I thoroughly enjoyed to twists and turns and one shocking admission, yes you certainly have to read it to know what I am speaking of. The characters have been given even more 'life' and are the very same throughout all the parts of this book.Very true to life in fact.This is not just another sequel, not just another 'series' it is a continuation of good writing thus providing a stimulating read. Thank you Nora, well done...again

***I received an ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.*** I loved the other books in this set, but I must say this one was a little slow and predictable to me. Love your writing Nora, but sorry you must have been a little distracted with this one.
This book started off very slowly, the first twist was totally unexpected the second one was sort of expected. Still a good read.

Kyle D'Aoust has been programming for about 10 years. In 2004, at the age of 14, he taught himself the C++ language. By the end of high school, he had learned Visual Basic and JavaScript as well. In college, he majored in game production and specialized in the Unity engine using C#. After graduating from college, Kyle started his career with gamifying software. He is currently working as a Serious Games Developer at Quicken Loans, creating games used as training material.

Useful guide for specific techniques, not complete games

I read a lot of books about Unity and C# since I'm always trying to up my game, so to speak. This book has some good sections but overall doesn't cohere as well as it could. But it could be useful for people with some Unity experience who are looking for specific techniques.

It jumps right into scripting individual subsystems without talking about what kind of game is going to be built and how everything will fit together. Later on you learn the example game is an RPG-style game with characters, weapons and objects. It would have been nice to know this ahead of time, because some of the chapters are only relevant to this type of game.

Overall this is more like a "cookbook" of various recipes, as opposed to a step-by-step guide to building a real game. If you already have some experience coding C# in Unity, and you are interested in some of the chapter topics, you should find the book useful.

Here's a brief rundown on some specific chapters:

* The first chapter on Interactive Input present a nice technique for switching among input control schemes. However there's an emphasis on supporting the XBox 360 controller which might not be relevant to a lot of developers.

* The GUI chapter relies a little too heavily on the old, mostly obsolete Unity GUI approach, so it is not too useful in the post-Unity-4.6 world.

* The Expandable Item Classes chapter presents a nice starting point for structuring in-game items that affect player characters and objects.

* The chapter on AI covers two different AI topics: simple enemy decision-making (switching an enemy object among Idle, Guard, Combat, Flee states), and pathfinding. The pathfinding section gives a good introduction to Unity's NavMesh system, which is not covered in many other books. The example for this chapter uses the AI scripts to animate some freely-available skeleton models (from the Asset Store) around an environment.

* The chapter about Keeping Score on the other hand presents some real brute-force coding with hard-coded achievement thresholds and such. There are better and simpler ways to code this, so I would give this chapter a pass.

* The same could be said for the next chapter, which covers Saving and Loading Data. It uses XML, which is generally heavier and harder to work with than JSON, and again shows some brute-force coding that might not hold up well over time.

* Chapter 8 deals with audio and offers some simple, reusable classes for managing and playing sounds.

* The final chapter, "Putting It All Together," builds a simple game by assembling all the subsystems from previous chapters. It's very nice to see all the parts working together at the end. This chapter could have been fleshed out a bit more. It would have been nice to have an overview, like a diagram, of how all the subsystems fit together, rather than a step-by-step "now add this, now add this" sequence. In fact this kind of overview would have been really useful prior to Chapter 1, so the reader can go into the rest of the book knowing what to expect.

Overall there are a lot of things to learn from this book. In addition there is a nice emphasis on play-testing at the end of each chapter, with suggestions of ways to enhance the examples in your own games. But it's not a complete guide to building your own games in Unity.

Great addition to the Unity developers tool box!!!

Bottom line up front, this book is a great tool to keep in your kit bag. With a basic knowledge of programming and Unity, I started an indie game development company with several game ideas in mind. What I quickly discovered was, like most things in life, there are multiple ways to accomplish a single task within Unity. This created a challenge I hadn’t planned for. Originally I thought it would be difficult to find the right literature to help me achieve my goal, but instead I found that I was inundated with information. I recently came across “Unity Game Development Scripting” by Kyle D'Aoust and became quite pleased with what I had found.

The book is laid out in a very efficient manner covering all the major aspects of creating a game. The first chapter deals with the most important aspect, defining user input. It lays out two options one for keyboards and the other for an Xbox controller. At first glance the reader may be tempted to think this doesn’t apply to me because I’m not developing for those platforms. This may be true, but if the reader looks deeper they will start to see how the techniques used in the book can transfer into other projects. The process the writer took to define different aspects and requirements for control are useful when designing the controls for all games.

Chapters 5 and 7 are also great examples of a situation where the techniques used are beneficial to any reader attempting to develop a game in Unity. I have personally struggled with scripting enemy artificial intelligence in a 2D platformer game and have waffled between different techniques. After reading chapter 5, I was able to add a more efficient solution to my games even though the writer is referencing 3D game creation. In addition, chapter 7 answers the question of saving game progress. When I first started developing games this task perplexed me, but “Unity Game Development Scripting” by Kyle D'Aoust does an excellent job of defining C# scripting that accomplishes the task.

Though I was overall happy with this book, there was one point of contention I had with the way it was written. The author provides numerous coding examples written in C# throughout each chapter. He does a good job giving a description after each block of coding, but I found it to be rather taxing on the mind to connect the explanations with the code previously read. A better way to accomplish this would have been to add comments directly into the code itself. This would have personally helped me better follow the readings.

Again, this book is an excellent tool for any developer to have. If you don’t have an intermediate understanding of programming and Unity, you will probably find this book to be frustrating as it is not a tutorial based piece of work. But if you are looking for a resource to help refine and/or add to your own techniques for game development then this is the right place to start.

Cookbook for intermediate to advanced level programming topics - but still with the old OnGUI system

I recently have had the opportunity to review the book Unity Game Development Scripting by Kyle D’Aoust, which was released in December 2014. In my opinion this intermediate to advanced level programming book requires you to have a basic understanding of C# and Unity 4.x in general. In my review I will take you through all 10 chapters of the book which contains 181 pages in total:

1. Interactive Input
This chapter gives an in-depth look at how to create controls for both the Xbox 360 Controller and mouse/keyboard inputs. You will also learn how to create customizable control profiles that the player can edit.

2. GUI Time
The second chapter will help you to create health bars, player data, hovering 3D health bars, 3D damage reports, enemy names, and so on. This sounds interesting, but unfortunately the whole book still uses Unity's old OnGUI system, so I think this was the biggest disappointment and I doubt that the UI aspects are helpful in creating real games with current Unity.

3. Expandable Item Classes
This chapter covers how to create in-game item classes for self, melee, projectile items and a classification system for these items. In my opinion this chapter shows you how to implement a generic item system which can be used in many games, especially RPGs.

4. Inventory
In this chapter's inventory system, there'll be common inventory elements created such as adding items, removing items, and creating quick-select items. Finally, you'll also create a way to show the inventory on the GUI. But once again, Kyle uses Unity's old OnGUI system and the chapter's result looks more applicable for a prototype than for a releasable game.

5. Enemy and friendly AIs
This chapter demonstrates how to create a dynamic AI including finite state machines and behavior trees. This AI system will handle behaviors, actions, animations, pathfinding,
and also a waypoint system. This chapter is about 25 pages strong, so it's one of the more detailed chapters of the book. But AI is also one of the most complex topics in game development, so I see this chapter as a general introduction for AI with Unity.

6. Keeping Score
The 6th chapter covers how to create, track, and save stats for the player in a class named StatsTracker. This tracker is using PlayerPrefs to persist the player's stats. You'll also create a system for achievements for those stats as well. This chapter is very detailed because it contains a lot of code for the StatsTracker and the achievement system for every achievement.

7. Creating Save and Load Systems
If you need to implement a checkpoint-based save system and an anywhere/anytime saving system, this chapter is for you. But advanced topics like protection against manipulation of those save files are missing.

8. Aural Integration
This chapter covers the creation of systems that will handle background music, atmospheric sounds, and sound effects. These systems are a playlist system, a randomized system, and an event-driven system. I think this chapter is helpful for nearly every game because sound and music is a very general topic.

9. Game Settings
Chapter 9 covers how to create customizable configurations for audio (like speaker settings) and video (like shadows on/off or v-sync on/off) settings. You'll create the ability to save and load these settings by using PlayerPrefs. This chapter contains a very basic implementation which can be used in many games regardless of their genre. It's easy to follow and to implement in your own game.

10. Putting It All Together
The last chapter assembles everything together. This chapter looks like the author was in a real hurry to finish the book. In only 9 pages you put everything together for an RPG-style game with characters, weapons and objects. Sadly there's no way to download the whole unity project with everything put together. The book's source is only containing cs-files for each chapter separately.

Summary 3/5 stars
Overall this is more like a "cookbook" of various recipes, which are assembled in the last chapter in only 9 pages for an RPG-style game with characters, weapons and objects. It would have been nice to know this earlier in the book, because some of the chapters are only relevant to this type of game. I really liked the usage of C# instead of JavaScript for Unity Scripting, because I prefer C# over JavaScript. If you are looking for any of the "cookbook" aspects of this book, you will get an introductory description and a concreate implementation of how you solve those problems. But it's really a pity that the old OnGUI system is still being used instead of Unity 4.6's new UI system. I think this is definitely a no-go for a book published in December 2014 and should be updated as soon as possible from the author. I also think 181 pages are a bit insufficient for the price tag of this book.
