As we begin to unravel and elucidate the intimate roles of carbohydrates in biological systems, there is an increased demand on synthetic chemists and biologists to discover viable avenues of producing significant quantities of these biomolecules in pure form. In recent years, we have witnessed a dramatic rise in the number of synthetic and biological methods available for the production of complex oligosaccharides and glycoconjugates in a rapid and efficient manner for biological study.

The chemistry and biology of carbohydrates are intimately linked and feed into the interdisciplinary field of glycobiology, which has received increased attention over recent times. It is therefore timely that a text is released that offers a stimulating and current take on the burgeoning areas of carbohydrate chemistry and glycobiology. The authors use clear and concise language, which allows new and potentially difficult concepts to be easily understood. About the Author
Robert Stick is a Queenslander by birth and completed his undergraduate and higher degrees at the University of Queensland. Following post-doctoral studies with Ray Lemieux and Sir Derek Barton, he took a faculty position at The University of Western Australia in 1975 and has since spent sabbatical leaves with Bert Fraser-Reid (Duke University), and with Bill Cullen and Steve Withers (both of the University of British Columbia).

"An Exciting and Blood-Curdling Biography!"

Do you like horror stories? Well, look no further, this book is for you! This is the biography of the most infamous ghoul and necrophiliac in American history: Edward Gein.

Born to George and Augusta Gein on August 27, 1906, Eddie's sad and pitiful life was doomed from the very beginning. His father was a raging alcoholic who beat him continually, and his mother was an extremely domineering religious fanatic who never showed him any compassion or love whatsoever.

Because of his mother's twisted teachings and beliefs about society: ESPECIALLY on the subject of women, Eddie became introverted, withdrawn and didn't understand how to interact with human beings. He was socially unaccepted and teased throughout his dismal and lonely youth. Even if he did manage to find someone willing to be his friend, his mother wouldn't allow it. Men were "filthy, vile creatures who only thought of sex", and women were wicked, soul snatching abominations. In essence, his mother was the only world he ever knew.

Now, for the good stuff! (And this was my favorite part of the book because it describes in great detail the events leading up to, and the discoveries made after his arrest.)

After she died, Eddie sealed off Augusta's room and made it a shrine. He let the house decay and lived in the most filthiest of conditions. Schechter takes us on a graphic and descriptive stroll through his home where hundreds of mice are running around empty food containers, decaying body parts, and endless amounts of other debris scattered all over the floor. We dine with Eddie and eat pork-and-beans from sawed off skull tops, and afterwards, we enjoy a quiet evening alone reading pulp fiction magazines about cannibals, headhunters and Nazi sadism on a grease soaked mattress.

Eddie robbed graves at night. After digging one up, he would carry the carcass home and cut off the pieces he wanted and cremate the rest in his woodstove.

He killed Mary Hogan and Bernice Wordon because they resembled his mother.
After he killed Bernice Worden, he was arrested for her murder when the authorities found her decapitated corpse hanging upside down from the rafters in his kitchen shed. It had been gutted and dressed out like a deer (You can see the actual crime scene photos of it on the internet.)

Among the most interesting items collected as evidence were the following:

A cane chair with the seat woven from strips of human skin
Lampshades and bracelets made from human skin
A tom-tom with the head fashioned from human flesh
A hunting knife with the sheath made from human skin
A belt fashioned out of female nipples
A shade pull made with a pair of woman's lips
Several masks, faces peeled from their skulls, hanging on his bedroom wall
A shoebox filled with female genitalia
Mary Hogan's head wrapped in a paper bag and tossed in a corner
And the most shocking of all: a "mammary vest"; a female suit sewn from several large pieces of human skin which he would parade around in.

The book includes: media coverage, photos, criminal proceedings, and the sentencing of Eddie Gein to Central State hospital for the Criminally Insane.

Lastly, Ed Gein inspired author Robert Bloch to write "Psycho", which in turn, inspired Alfred Hitchcock to turn it into the cult movie classic. Throughout the years, other 'slice-and-dice' movies, such as, "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre", and the serial killer, "Buffalo Bill", in the ever famous "Silence of the Lambs", have all been based on the true acts of Eddie Gein.

Tactfully written, "Deviant" was every bit of repulsive and shocking as I had hoped it would be... I loved it!

Another Solid Effort by Harold Schechter

I read "Deranged" not too long ago. Although I believe that I've seen Harold Schechter quite a few times on various true-crime television shows -- most likely on the Investigation Discovery (ID) network -- that was my first read from him. I thought that it was a very good effort about the life and crimes of one Albert Fish, and so I decided to give this one a try. Naturally, from my rating, I wasn't disappointed with this one either.

I like how Mr. Schechter tends to choose one word titles for his books: "Deranged," "Deviant," "Fiend," etc. etc. While it doesn't necessarily give you a clue about who the book is about, it tends to describe each of these serial killers in a nutshell. But more than that, I really appreciate the effort that the author obviously puts into research. It seems that he must travel to the area where each of the killers lived, and then spend a lot of time searching microfiche for at least old newspaper information. After all, most of his books are about really old cases, and most of the newspapers from the era of his books still aren't available online. (Periodically, I did a Google search here and there for newspaper articles that he mentions in the book, and even Google couldn't find them.)

At any rate, while it appears that Mr. Schechter is a professor of American literature and pop culture, he comes off to me more as an historian. Maybe that was his minor? Maybe it's more of a hobby? Either way, he seems to be fairly knowledgeable about history as well.

I'm nearly finished with "Deviant," and about the only thing that I didn't necessarily like about it was how the author called Ed Gein a "little man." Over and over. Personally, I just thought that it was an unnecessary ad hominem. Taking a peek around the web, I guess that Mr. Gein was around 5 foot 7, so I guess that he was a "little man," but I'm not convinced that it added to the story. Perhaps the motivation for this was to remind the reader that even someone diminutive in stature can be bigger than life as a killer?

It is interesting how this story unfolds, and while reading, I'm not exactly convinced that Mr. Gein was your standard "evil" guy. He seems to me to be more of an enigma, at least from a serial killer perspective. It really isn't clear if he himself even understood the nature of his crimes; to him, it was as if there was no difference between field dressing a deer and field dressing a human. (I'm quite convinced that many people throughout history have attempted to argue this position, and while I believe that it's a good argument to have from an academic perspective, it might be a tricky one to win. If I were to argue against it, I would start by saying that most species do not condone the killing of their own kind, but it surely doesn't always hold. I believe that many monkey species kill their own, as an example. At any rate, I would like to read a valid and sound argument against it, as these types of arguments usually devolve into "appeals to emotion" -- or perhaps more likely "circular reasoning", or something like, "it's bad because it's bad," which I've heard one too many times in my life -- which are obviously invalid immediately.)

While my favorite true-crime author is probably Jack Olsen, he hasn't been with us for over a decade now, and unfortunately, most of his books are not available on Kindle. And I hate buying "real" books anymore; I far prefer e-books. Luckily for us, it appears that most of Mr. Schechter's books are available on Kindle, and I have quite a few left to go. It should keep me busy for a while, and I'd recommend that you'd consider reading them as well.

Morbid Fascination

Had this book been published today, rather than in 1989, it would have contained much more detail than it does. And it likely would have contained more (speculative?) content about Ed Gein's psychology. Taken as the product of its time, however, it's a fascinating read about an even more fascinating character. It's hard to imagine the deranged schizophrenic who inspired Psycho as a sympathetic figure. But it's one of Harold Schechter's authorial gifts that he manages to make Ed Gein as sadly sympathetic as he is monstrous.

One of my college professors opined that what made Victor Frankenstein's creature a monster in our imaginations is the fact that he has no — and will never have any — human connections. With the exception of his cruelly overbearing mother, who may, indeed, have been Victor to Ed's monster, Ed Gein had no meaningful human connections. That he sought such connections in the grisly way he did, can only make us wonder at our human nature, at the definition of "evil", at our capacities to stun and horrify.

Deviant is a highly worthwhile read.

Parece un completo timo. El círculo rojo que se encuentra en la parte superior derecha de la portada dice que incluye acceso a un test de Inteligencia Emocional. Éste sirve de base para seguir el curso del libro. La realidad es que esta edición NO INCLUYE ESTE TEST por lo que hace el resto del libro inservible. Este es uno de los riesgos de comprar libros en internet, y sobretodo en la tienda de Amazon que mezcla distintas ediciones con distintos ISBN dentro del mismo producto.

Es por ello que mi valoración es la más baja posible. Amazon debería dejar de vender un producto que anuncia algo que es mentira.

Excellent psychological thriller/Family Drama - addictive reading.

An absolutely brilliant psychological thriller come family drama, based apparently on a real life case which I shall have to track down, we follow Hannah as she tries to come to terms with the loss of her best friend having already lost her mother to a tragic accident. When Danny disappears, she is thrown into turmoil, as life becomes something very different.

I found this highly intriguing throughout, not least because Hannah herself had great depth of character, her thought processes and actions bringing into sharp focus the emotional turmoil that loss can bring – especially loss where there is no closure, no clue as to what went wrong. Even though we have an insular view of events, told as it is solely by the one person, the rest of the “cast” come alive through her eyes – her father, Danny’s parents and Sister, her friends – and she manages to make you feel her frustration as it becomes clear that secrets are being kept.

As the tale unfolds it is absolutely riveting – one of those stories that is not only thrilling but highly emotional, often upsetting but always compelling and that makes you cling on, desperate for the answers. As in life though, not everything is clear cut and often the truth we seek can hurt – another reason I found this one so fascinating, especially when it came to Danny’s mum, an amazingly complex yet captivating character.

It has a wonderful flow to it, beautifully written to keep you on your toes, totally character driven with a real poignant feel that puts you in the moment, I can certainly recommend this for anyone who loves a twisty tale with heart and soul.

Great debut novel

While Hannah is grieving the tragic death of her mother, her best friend Danny goes missing. When an extensive police investigation fails to come up with answers, Danny’s mother Martha desperately wants Hannah to be in a TV documentary about missing teenagers, but Hannah’s Dad refuses. Tension between the two grieving families is apparent. However, Hannah is unusually close to Danny’s family and does whatever she can to help Martha, who will stop at nothing to find her son.

I won't say any more about the plot because I don’t want to spoil it for you, but this is only the start. This is a most exciting story with bags of plot, lots of mystery and plenty of pace. The characters are well drawn, and the relationships between the characters are very nicely observed; most notably the adults’ differences which are skilfully under-played, and the friendship between Hannah and Danny’s little sister Alice (who has Down’s syndrome) which is touchingly warm and sweet.

There is so much to enjoy in this story. The nearer the end I got, the more I realised how beautifully the different story-lines had been woven together, and yet the more convinced I became that there was no way it could all be tied up satisfactorily.

And then it ended, and the end was both unexpected and rewarding.

A great debut novel I heartily recommend.

Couldn't put it down!

I loved the story and characters i this book, and how immersed I became. The twist was very surprising, and shocking considering this book is meant to be based on a true story. I also loved the fast pace and the off non linear timeline. I particularly enjoyed the main subplot too, as it was almost as exciting as the main one.

About the Author
Shamim Sarif recently directed the motion picture adaptation of I Can't Think Straight. She is also the writer/director of the award-winning feature film, The World Unseen, which is based on her novel of the same name. The book of The World Unseen won the Pendleton May First Novel Award and a Betty Trask Award. She is the author of a further novel, Despite the Falling Snow. A beautiful love stoey

I got this book yesterday evening, and had it read it by eleven at night. I couldn't put it down the sense of emotions that were used to tell this story was just beautiful the love story between these to women were so real that you can see it all in your head. Yes short but perfect if you are like me and has to wait to see the movie on dvd get the book you won't be disappoint it because you will want to read it over and over until you see the movie love this book......

I have also read Sarif's other novels, The World Unseen and Despite the Falling Snow and I'm amazed at the versatility and talent of this author. I Can't Think Straight is a witty and well crafted page turner and love story. The book also explores themes such as tolerance of religion towards homosexuality and attitudes towards the Middle East conflict. It's a must read.

Mozart's "completed" operas for singing technique

These two volumes of libretti titled "The Libretti of Mozart's Completed Operas" feature literal translations, phonetically spelled out line by line for many of Mozart operas.

The opera libretti included in these two volumes are La Finta Semplice, Bastien und Bastienne, Mitridate, Lucio Silla, La Finta Giardiniera, Il Re Pastore, Idomeneo, Die Entfuhrung aus dem Serail, Die Schauspieldirektor, Le Nozze di Figaro, Don Giovanni, Cosi Fan Tutte, Die Zauberflote, La Clemenza di Tito and Zaide.

Die Schauspieldirektor and Zaide feature only the words to the vocal pieces and not the text (or surviving text) to the actual plays.

While the title claims the book features the libretti of the "completed operas", there are four completed operas which are missing from these volumes.

The missing titles are Die Schuldigkeit des Ersten Gebots (Mozart's first operatic work), the incredibly hard to find Apollo et Hyacinthus, Ascanio in Alba and Il Sogno di Scipione. The rare oratorio La Betulia Liberata is not presented, either.

The book features each libretto line by line, directly translating the dialog and lyrics (with numerous footnotes to clear up strange usage, puns, metaphor and strange sentence construction). The print is very large.

Each play has a unique illustration on its title page.

The books accomodate singers who are learning how to sing the operas with correct accents and pronunciation.

The alternate arias and recitatives for plays such as Idomeneo and Figaro are not presented in this work. Similarly the Prague and Vienna versions of Don Giovanni with different second acts are not translated seperately.

The featured libretti are painstakingly and passionately translated.

A singer or scholar studying Mozart, however, will find these two volumes a great resource and quite useful.

More valuable for the translations than the IPA...

This review can be applied to the complete catalog of Nico Castel's Opera Libretti. I happen to own most of them and have found them extremely useful as a teacher of voice and as a director of opera. The hard cover linen bindings are Smyth-Sewn, rather than glued, so you can expect a lifetime of use. They are printed on bright white paper which is easy to read. They reek of quality. Now to the content. For me, the word-for-word translations are invaluable. Mr. Castel has also provided idiomatic translations when the literal ones are a bit obtuse. This is very helpful. There are many voice teachers and singers out there that rely on IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) to teach/learn their texts. I must admit that I do not subscribe entirely to IPA as a sole source for pronunciation. In my opinion, while IPA does offer the student a groundwork for pronouncing the words, it does not offer the means to learn the correct inflection that must be mastered if one wishes to really become a master communicator in foreign languages. So, I believe it is advisable that a singer move beyond IPA and work with a coach that has expertise in the foreign languages. Many thanks to Nico Castel for the immense labor of love that these volumes must have cost him. They truly belong in every vocal pedagogue's library.
