For vinyl and music lovers this is a must! It explores the resurgence and resistance of the analogue record amidst the digitalization of music. A history of music recordings from records, CDs, MP3 downloads and back to vinyl is masterly described. It very effectively psycho-socio analyses the basic human need to own tangible things and how this gives ourselves an identity and creates a (sub)culture. Ooh!..Too academic you think? No. There is a casual style as well, complete with photos and verbatim interviews with DJs, store owners, collectors that give it a personal, readable feel. If you are a music lover, especially a vinyl fan, you'll see your experiences in every other page. Or one can read it just to understand the human condition that we all are. Never knew this vinyl/music culture has so many layers of humanness! Authors Ian and Dominik do not try to sell the vinyl message but leave You to experience and understand the subject matter. About the Author

Raph Koster is a veteran game designer who has been professionally credited in almost every area of the game industry. He's been the lead designer and director of massive titles such as Ultima Online and Star Wars Galaxies; and he's contributed writing, art, soundtrack music, and programming to many more titles ranging from Facebook games to single-player titles for handheld consoles. He has worked as a creative executive at Sony Online and Disney Playdom, and in 2012 was honored as an Online Game Legend at the Game Developers Conference Online.

Interesting read but only part of it is about the theory of fun

Ultimately I was disappointed by this book. As I game designer I was hoping for a book with information about how to make games fun, pick game concepts that would be fun and find the fun in games. I found that the first half of this book explains the author's theory on what makes games fun at a fairly high level. I was expecting the second half of the book to flesh the theory out, give examples, show evidence and explain how to apply it. Instead the second half of this book is an essay defending video games as an art form and discussing ethics in video games. It is interesting but not particularly useful.

I was hoping for a book that would describe the various psychological theory's of fun and give examples showing how games apply these theory's to create fun. I was also hoping for an explanation why some game mechanics such as Tetris are fun to play for hours whereas others become boring quickly. The author's theory does not explain this.

I also feel that the author missed some of the things that make games fun. For example many games are built around wealth creation. The book doesn't mention this beyond a gemeral mention that most games have a reward structure.

This book is an interesting read but I am still looking for a good book offering insights into how to make fun games.

Buy it to "feel" like you're working towards something in game design, but don't buy it for any revelatory "Ah hah" moments.

As someone working, relatively new, in the industry, I have to say this book didn't really help me much, or broaden my perspective. I was hoping there would be a depth to this book that would help me gain insight on design/developing games to be more fun, however I found most of the info is either very obvious, or so broad that it doesn't really help. This is just my interpretation of course, but I've basically gobbled up as many books about game development and design as I can, and this book really left no mark on me. I think for the serious learner, there is little to be gained, if you just want an easy read around the concept of game design, and why game designers are as important as doctors, I suppose it does the trick. It's a fun and well put together book, so I feel somewhat bad for faulting it, it's sort of like ripping on a movie made for kids. I really feel it's designed to make people feel like their fast tracking their way or getting a leg up in game design, when really it's just making you feel that way. Like I said, this book wasn't for me and I don't think I could recommend to anyone who's actually serious about giving up large chunks of their social life and sanity to making games as opposed to just "knowing" about it.

Not bad, but a little short on information

As already mentioned in other reviews, the first half of this book is kind of dedicated to what makes a game actually fun, the second half is an essay defending games as an art form. I am a person that likes just plain facts, also I expect to find statements backed up by research (even if it's simple common sense research, nothing rigorous or people in white coats). This book is nothing like that, it is written in prose in a style that is more like a commentary or conversation, and the ideas are scattered along the book. The background of the author is a writer, so although his language is very rich and precise, it ultimately doesn't deliver what the title of the book promises. It doesn't delve into an actual theory of what makes a game fun, it just throws here and there ideas about his own experiences of what makes a game fun. In his defense the ideas that he does present are valuable, but unfortunately you have to extract the information little by little by flipping through many pages of the book. By the way, half of the book are illustrations, and I personally believe that half of them don't add or enrich the content. Ultimately I'm a little disappointed. The book in itself is not bad, I just think that the book could be about only 30 to 40 pages of actual information about what makes a game entertaining.

Possibly the most influential jurisprudent of the twentieth century, Hans Kelsen [1881-1973] was legal adviser to Austria’s last emperor and its first republican government, the founder and permanent advisor of the Supreme Constitutional Court of Austria, and the author of Austria’s Constitution, which was enacted in 1920, abolished during the Anschluss, and restored in 1945. He was the author of more than forty books on law and legal philosophy. Active as a teacher in Europe and the United States, he was Dean of the Law Faculty of the University of Vienna and taught at the universities of Cologne and Prague, the Institute of International Studies in Geneva, Harvard, Wellesley, the University of California at Berkeley, and the Naval War College.

About the Author
Hans Kelsen had a distinguished career at a variety of European universities, and in government services, at Vienna, Cologne, the Institut Universitaire des Hautes Etudes in Paris, and then in Prague. He served as legal adviser to the United Nations War Crimes Commission in Washington, D.C.

The american Pure Theory of Law

Hans Kelsen (1881-1973) is, for most of jurists, the most important legal theorist in 20st Century. Born in Prague, he lived and worked in Austria (till 1930), from then on -due to the political circumstances- in Germany (1930-1933), french Switzerland (1933-1940) and the USA (1940-1973).

His main work is the famous "Pure Theory of Law" (1934), a formalistic and structural scheme for interpret modern legal systems.

Throughout his long and prolific life, across the three different legal traditions (german, french and anglosaxon) in wich he lived, taught and wrote, he published a large number of articles and books.

The General Theory of Law and State (GTLS) marks a special phase in his carreer, because it symbolizes not a mere translation of his Pure Theory, but a true american version of it, because for the first time he confronts with the english and american legal tradition.

For those who knows the german version of his Pure Theory, will found the GTLS es a wider and clearer explanation of its main thesis.

Kelsen's text is an example of internal coherence and concise argumentation. The book examines fundamental problems of legal thinking, and its' quality deserved to enter into scope of legal classics.

Excelent book!

From the father of Positivism, this book explores the true nature of the norm and the role it plays in relation to state and society. Excellent analysis of positivist normativity.
You should also consider reading The Pure Theory of Law, by Kelsen, as well as books by Rawls, Nozick, MacIntyre, and Posner.

About the Author
Classical guitar technique pedagogue Richard Stadler began playing classical guitar when he was 11 years old. When he was 16 years old he went to study at the prestigious Interlochen Arts Academy where he graduated from in 1998. Due to complications from occupation related hand injuries Stadler gave up playing guitar for years, until 2008 when Nicholas Lambson totally rebuilt his playing Technique and Dr. Tasmin Cordie began to help him heal from chronic inflammation issues related to his diet. Stadler is now concertizing again, and released his first solo album this February. Stadler performs and writes original classical guitar music and is known for his extravagant opening tuning compositions. His meditative playing style is both powerful and delicate to the ear. Stadler is also a much sought after classical guitar teacher famous for his 7 month Technical Boot Camp Course. Stadler is excited about all the recent positive feedback on his book, "45 Minute Classical Guitar Mastery" and hopes his technical training continues to be shared with the world. Stadler enjoys teaching his wonderful student body in person and over Skype. This book edits the seemingly endless number of technical studies into a concise
15 exercise format. Richard Stadler's instructions are clear and well written.
Also included is much useful information that is outside the realm of technical study.

Plagiarized and In Litigation - Do Not Buy

THE MATERIAL IN THIS BOOK HAS BEEN STOLEN.

I am the author's mentor. I was very proud to have helped him regain the ability to play the guitar, and to be able to do so professionally. He expressed his gratitude by stealing years of my work.

This book should never have gone into print. The methodology, the exercises, and the tips and tricks are all things I taught him and are going into my own publication.

This book will be pulled from the stands pending active litigation.

Yan Zhang is an associate professor in the School of Computing and Information Technology, University of Western Sydney. He received his PhD degree from the University of Sydney, Australia in 1994. Yan has research interests in knowledge update, program modification and evolution, logic programming, model checking, descriptive complexity theory, and information security. Yan has published many research papers in top international conferences and journals in his areas and obtained various national competitive research grants. Currently Yan is leading a research group Intelligent Systems Laboratory (ISL) at the University of Western Sydney.
