To Kabat-Zinn, meditation is important because it brings about a state of "mindfulness," a condition of "being" rather than "doing" during which you pay attention to the moment rather than the past, the future, or the multitudinous distractions of modern life. In brief, rather poetic chapters, he describes different meditative practices and what they can do for the practitioner. Kabat-Zinn, the founder and director of the Stress Reduction Clinic at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, provides an excellent handbook on living fully in the present moment through mindfulness meditation. This meditative technique, widely used in Buddhist practice, is presented in nonsectarian form with sufficient instructions for the beginner (who may also order the cassette tapes to facilitate disciplined practice). Kabat-Zinn's previous Full Catastrophe Living (Delacorte, 1990) was directed to those in crisis; this book, which is for everyone, includes reflections on the beauty of the present and meditation's emotional and spiritual applications. An important book for public and seminary libraries, and for health and New Age collections.

More than pleasantly surprised

A family member bought this book. I found it sitting on a shelf, glanced at the cover and involuntarily thought to myself "uh oh, granola time," and came within a heartbeat of dismissing the book out of hand. Luckily, I did not. Instead, I read the introduction, and then found myself -- almost in a state of disbelief -- reading on and on. I was amazed to find that the book is not just one more new age book muttering away about a world none of us really lives in. To the contrary, the book is written by someone with a profound understanding of everyday reality, who is astonishingly good at sharing that understanding. This is simply a beautiful little book, beautifully written. I would be curious to know if others are reacting to this book the way I am: I feel compelled to rave about it. I read the book for the first time weeks ago, yet tonight in the grocery store I found myself slowing down, marvelling at the sight of my daughter gaily picking out tomatoes, and consciously basking in the moment. And I'm a middle-aged Republican, not particularly predisposed to spiritual impulses! The author of this book has something timeless and important to impart, and he does so with unusual intelligence and grace. I really like this book -- indeed, I hope I'm forgiven for suspecting that it is a work of genius. I also hope that the author happens to read this review, because he should know how much his work is appreciated!

If you are interested in meditation, or, if you want to find

a way to slow the pace of your busy world, Jon Kabat-Zinn can express the "out of body" concepts of meditation in a way that no one else can.
You get to choose: "Wherever you go...." is a book that can be explored over and over, that can start you on a path to a new habit to find within yourself what you need to survive today's busy world; that can help you find a new habit to renew the life you lead. Or, utilize its message just as a brief "chapter read" to jump start the positive if you are not looking for a lifelong habit.
It is very difficult to express, in words, the inner activities that result in becoming comfortable in your own skin. Kabat-Zinn writes thoughtfully and honestly about how he has accomplished this, and what things might work for you. There are many treasures in this book. For me, his ability to describe the rewards one gets from practiced patience, and to impress upon the reader the simplicity of the "body scan" and how it can lead to the habit of lying down meditation are two examples of things that readers can take away at any given time from his book.
Many self-help readers today are looking for the "quick fix" or some small coping practice they can employ to keep their days positive. In some ways, in addition to helping you understand why meditation works and why it can change your life, Kabat-Zinn writes a poetic and illuminating version of the "one minute help" chapters that the "Don't Sweat the Small Stuff" series provided to these readers in the busy working world.
When you couple his vision and ideas with the lovely verse that liberally sprinkles his book (Kabir, Thoreau and Whitman are favorites) you have a quiet and inspirational message that can do more to help you understand and eliminate your stress than can all the meditation, control and organizational techniques advocated in today's America could ever do.
Read "Wherever you go, there you are" and learn how mindfulness can change the course of your daily life for the better. It works.

In The Timeless Here and Now

My best friend tends to take life slowly and accept it on its own terms...and that facet of his personality has always driven me crazy! :-) The words "slow" and "languid" could never be applied to my lifestyle. I have always hurried through life at such a frantic pace...regretting yesterday and dreaming of tomorrow, yet never truly living in the moment. A year ago I happened upon this book, and it has made an enormous impact on my life. This literary jewel took me to a place I'd never visited before: the realm of 'moment mindfulness.' As the author so eloquently writes,

The lack of mindfulness "...scavenges to fill time, conspires with my mind to keep me unconscious, lulled in a fog of numbness to a certain extent. It has me unavailable to others, missing the play of the light on the table, the smells in the room, the energies of the moment. Stillness, insight, and wisdom arise only when we can settle into being complete in this moment, without having to seek or hold on to or reject anything."

Learning how to immerse myself in this moment, and this moment alone, has been incredibly difficult. Yet the serenity, peace and soul satisfaction experienced therein are priceless. The "Non-Judging" chapter alone is worth the price of the book. Realizing my propensity to constantly evaluate my experiences and hold them up against expectations and standards that I create, often out of fear, has been tremendously liberating. I largely thank this book, and my best friend, for that lesson learned. :-)

I enthusiastically recommend this book to everyone. I find it especially useful to my clients who struggle with childhood abuse issues. Therapy clients who suffer from bi-polar, COPD or Borderline Personality disorders could also be helped significantly from learning the meditation techniques in this book.

We exist as we are, on this plane, in this realm, at this moment in the timeless here and now. And that is enough....more than enough.

The truism that delays waste time and time costs money -- is almost monumentally pertinent to the construction industry which, by its very nature, involves massive expenditure with the requirement of massive capital investment.

Delay and disruption, however, are the two factors that seem to occur in the construction industry more often than they are avoided – hence the pressing need on the part of all practitioners at the Construction Bar for the latest edition of this indispensable text published recently by Informa from Routledge as part of their Construction Practice series.

‘Delay,’ says the expert and erudite author Andrew Burr, ‘happens in all industries ,jurisdictions and cultures,’ adding that when time has not been managed effectively, the consequences can be devastating for all participants in a project large or small, from employers and consultants to contractors and suppliers.

One of the more spectacular examples cited is that of the Scottish Parliament building which incurred prolongations costs of £150 million – a sum which, as Burr points out, ‘could have funded a fully equipped general hospital.’ Other projects like the Shard had their problems too.

Fortunately there are legal processes aimed either at settling the complex legal disputes that almost inevitably result from delays, or preventing such delays from happening in the first place. By way of example in the book’s introduction, the author refers to a protocol published in October 2002 as the result of certain discussions by the Society of Construction Law.

The resulting Delay and Disruption Protocol set out in Appendix 3 emphasizes the need for foresight (if at all possible) in the early stages of a project. The concern here says the author, is with ‘managing time proactively or delaying with extensions time and compensation for delay.’

Rather dismayingly, ‘the industry did not take this message to heart,’ says Burr. Instead, the protocol has been used more frequently ‘as a stick with which to beat the opposition in disputes rather than to avoid disputes in the first place.’

Written with precision and clarity, the book offers a wealth of discussion containing down-to-earth advice as to how problems -- specifically legal problems -- relating to time management can be overcome, or at least dealt with on a rational basis. While no two construction projects are alike, the author asserts that projects failing to be completed on time have two factors in common: poor project programing and poor record keeping, ‘competence in both of which is essential for effective project control.’

It should be emphasised that the book is a team effort with contributions from ten experts including the author. Overall, it is a very good introductory text. It covers a broad range of topics. Overall, this is a basic first semester text for both Elementary and Secondary Teachers. Don't expect it to Rock Your World, but overall its pretty good.

Waste of money

I had the misfortune of attending a class where this was the required text. This may be the worst textbook I've ever had. The editors have no pretenses about being objective: they often present only one side of an issue, or dramatically downplay the opposing view. Some of the exercises are comically biased. The MyLabSchool portion of the text was abysmal: the pre- and post-tests were riddled with errors. My professor was engaged in a continuous battle with the publishing company over the shoddy workmanship. The online video portions would freeze or, more often than not, simply not play - the whole class complained about it.

If you are a professor looking to acquire a new text for your class, please skip over this one. If you're a student who is required to use this text, Lord help you.

Missing Chapter 4

The book is in overall great condition and a good read. The only problem is that this particular printing/edition is missing Chapter 4 and has two Chapter 5's. This was not just a problem with my book. Several others in my class also have the same problem with this printing of the book and they bought theirs from different places. Amazon needs to be more careful about the product they send out. I got it for a good price, but expected to have a complete book.

Fresh Perspective

I thoroughly enjoyed this. There are some who might find the concept of the metaphysical difficult to swallow, but the author handles it in such a factual, well-grounded manner that it rings true. The story of Jacobs Johnson's life unfolds smoothly and casts a fresh perspective on the time period and the workings of the nation during the civil war.

A must read from Linda Alice Dewey!

Thus begins chapter one in The Ghost Who Would Not Die by Linda Alice Dewey. Ms. Dewey is a unique author in that the stories she tells do not come from her imagination; rather, they come from the spirits who lived, died, and came back to tell them.

Impossible, you think. Well, as a paranormal investigator, I believe it is possible. My journey with Ms. Dewey began with her first book, Aaron's Crossing. This story was also a tale communicated to Linda from a spirit. It talks about Aaron's life and death and gave wonderful insight into the afterlife. Being such a huge fan of Aaron's Crossing, I couldn't wait until The Ghost Who Would Not Die became available. Not only do I enjoy Linda's style, I was also looking forward to the added insight I would gain. I thought of that insight only in terms of the paranormal knowledge I would obtain. What surprised me the most: I gained so much more.

Although The Ghost Who Would Not Die is about the afterlife, i.e., the dead, I learned about living from this book. Jacobs, the runaway slave whose story is being told, advises the living throughout the book on the best ways to live your life and to insure that your afterlife runs more smoothly than his did.

I realize there are skeptics in the world who will believe the book is entirely a work of fiction. That's fine. Whether you believe in the paranormal or not, this book is an interesting read, and I defy anyone to walk away from it without having gained something they can use.

I wholeheartedly recommend The Ghost Who Would Not Die. From the time you meet Jacobs to the time you finish the book, you will be engrossed in every detail. If you open your mind, you might learn about one possibility with regards to the afterlife. More importantly, I'm hoping you will take with you LIFE lessons as well. I know I did.

Reads more like a fiction story rather than nonfiction

This book was well written, but I was a little disappointed in it based on the other reviews that I read before purchasing it. When I read a story about hauntings or the paranormal I want there to be some fact-based or historical research in it. There was none of that in this book. There was no attempt to find any historical records to validate what the ghost slave, Jacobs, was communicating to the writer.

I thought at some point surely the author would try and research slave sale records, or search for Jacobs' burial spot (though admittedly as a transient he could have been buried in an unmarked grave), research the all black Civil War regiment that Jacob was briefly a part of, or even try and find the church where he once worked at and taught. There is not one attempt at all to make this story credible. It is a little convenient that the very nature of the story, a poor, itinerant black man living in the aftermath the Civil War might not leave behind much physical documentation of his earthy presence. Did the author have no curiosity to research this??

I have read the book, "Aaron's Crossing," that this author also wrote, and in this book, she at least finds the graves of Aaron and his family (though the author doesn't give the exact names of the family for privacy purposes of those descendants living today). Without any fact-based evidence at all in this book it is just a fiction story in my eyes. I feel my time would have been better spent with a book that at least made such an attempt. There is nothing like reading about a paranormal case and having it being backed by documentation (exciting!). I realize that that is not always possible, but without it, this is just a yarn. So for those of you, who like me like more substance in their paranormal readings, look elsewhere.

Okay but can be improved...

I have to agree with a previous review about the poor editing. Some of the steps could be clarified a lot by just adding a simple screenshot of the menu or the button. For an introduction to Inventor this book is perfect for the price you pay and even though some instructions are unclear, you can figure out what the outcome should be. Some tutorials feels like the author took shortcuts and left out steps because it was too much effort to write the steps again. I feel that practice makes perfect and covering a topic in one tutorial doesn't mean you have mastered it. So instead of just guiding you through which tools to use to achieve the desired results, the author just leaves it out completely. There is also not a lot of explanation on to why certain settings or tools are used. There are A LOT of conflicts in which plane to use when sketching, somewhere the X,Y and Z axis' got mixed up.
A bit of a frustrating read - but still educational.

Poor Editing

Very very poor editing. A thirteen year old could have wrote better. Some directions aren't correct. (Eg. It tells you top left corner but it's actually top right corner.) some sentences stop in the middle, therefore you don't know what the sentence is trying to say.

Great for College, not High School Freshman

This book is an okay resource. I brought it to help some of the students in my class practice CAD without me having to be over them the whole time. After reading through it I found that it was written a little over their heads (9th grade) and had less diagrams then I would expect from a tutorial book.

This book however is great for an upper classmen or college student trying to learn at home about how to use inventor. It does give more information than the other text I use, but it isn't accessible by my students.
