The Monastic Diurnal: Or Day Hours of the Monastic Breviary According to the Holy Rule of St. Benedict with Additional Rubrics and Devotions for Its Recitation in Accordance with the Book of Common Prayer is an English translation of the Day Hours from the Breviarium Monasticum published at Bruges in 1925 after extensive revision and restoration by its Benedictine editors. It was revised to meet the needs of Anglo-Catholics and includes the King James text for lessons and the Covendale Psalter for the Psalms.
A liturgical and devotional classic, The Monastic Diurnal has been prayed by generations of English-speaking clergy, religious and layfolk It is a high quality reprint of the 1963 Oxford University Press edition, including all texts necessary for the daily recitation of the traditional Benedictine Hours of Lauds, Prime, Terce, Sext, None, Vespers and Compline. Matins is not included. Designed to last, it has a Semi-hard black leatherette cover, with title stamped in gold. Two color print, with the rubics in red, the4" by 6" book consists of 880 pages printed on "Bible paper" with gilt edges.
My volume has a semi-hard black leatherette cover with title stamped in gold-foil. It includes six ribbons for easy recitation. Apparently there is an accompanying volume which contains Gregorian settings for the Services. There are generally three or four collects for each saint. This is pretty common and is done to accommodate Anglicans and Catholics from different traditions. The introduction to the book gives a good indication of how to tell the difference. This edition gives you the prayers before and after the Divine Office, as well as the Lord"s Prayer, Apostles' Creed & Hail Mary said before each hour. The Psalter is placed up front. Personally, I would prefer it to be in the middle because using it every day places a strain on the binding. The Andrew's Press moveable feasts reflect that of the 1928 Book of Common Prayer. Since this edition is a reprint of revisions of several books going back to the first half of the 20th Century. So the text formats represent that time period, yet is easily read, and quite bold, akin to that in the Episcopal 1928 Book of Common Prayer.
This is designed to be a workhorse. The thinness of this edition means that it can easily fit in your back pocket but the cover takes a bit to get its shape back. Mine feels like a hard but flexible shell, not imitation leather. A lesser quality than leather, it adds to the durability because it is not as delicate. This is a tough material. Judging from this ad, it also comes in a leather addition although I have not seen it advertised by the publisher or seen one myself. AA leather cover would be nice.
